On February 21, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) held a review meeting to carry out operational review of CMA Global Forecast System V4.0 (CMA-GFS V4.0). The expert panel held that CMA-GFS V4.0 featured by marked technical improvement and enhanced forecasting capacity met with operational upgrade requirement. The expert panel reached the consensus that the system passed operational review. Mr. Bi Baogui, Deputy Administrator of CMA attended the meeting.
Targeted at the existing deficiencies in the original version CMA-GFS V3.3, and combined with major medium-range numerical weather prediction (NWP) model development trend, Center for Earth System Modeling and Prediction (CEMC) of CMA further improved and upgraded key technologies like the dynamic framework, physical progress, data assimilation, parallel computing, and new product R&D of global assimilation forecasting system.
After the upgrade, the assimilation framework and new satellite data application of the system is noticeably boosted. The horizontal resolution of the model is increased from 0.25¡ãto 0.125¡ãand the computer efficiency is notably enhanced.
Weather field forecasting performance is comprehensively ramped up. In northern hemisphere, the available forecasting days surpassed 8 days for the first time. The upgraded system has enabled more logical physical process factors, and more systemic quantitative precipitation forecasting performance system.
