On July 28, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) convened a meeting on the upgrade of meteorological sounding operational system, announcing that it will upgrade L-band sounding to Beidou sounding system within the next 3 years. 131 sounding stations nationwide will round out the upgrade and operational access of meteorological sounding operational system by 2025. This move will be a milestone for filling up the meteorological observation deficiency, and support high-quality development of meteorology.
Beidou sounding system is the third-generation sounding system independently developed by China. The Beidou sounding system has improved the accuracy of existing high-altitude wind measurements by an order of magnitude, providing more precise data for numerical weather forecasting and weather analysis.
Currently, through the construction of the "cloud plus end" ground-air internet of things transmission mode, the key technologies of signal cross-region reception and overall network control have been broken through, which has achieved targeted observation of key areas and close coordination with forecasting and service.
During about 1-year trial operation, the Beidou sounding system has been ascended for over 2800 times, which boasts reliable data and its data has achieved good results in severe weather forecasting and services like typhoon and rainstorm.
